Anyone who has not lived with chronic pain has no clue about this issue. The problem is people do not have self control and alternative pain relief is kept from those who do. You cannot fix narcotic abuse by reducing the prescriptions of those who actually need these medications. You have to address the addictive nature of of those who abuse those drugs. By making less addictive methods (cannabis for example available, those who ARE treating a real condition are able to self regulate the amount of necessary narcotics. Not everyone who uses narcotics are druggies. Many are just trying to live a life unavailable to them otherwise. Yes. Some people abuse drugs. That is a fact of life. But to penalize everyone because of some people's addictive nature is moronic at best. Alcohol abuse is a glaring example of this. Some people can enjoy an occasional drink whereas some become an alcoholic. But there is never a push to limit the amount of alcohol stores may sell. Likewise obesity, many people are addicted to food yet I've never seen any suggestions that the amount food available for sale be regulated. Addictive people will always find an outlet to meet their respective addictions. Addressing those people's problems addresses the issue not penalizing those who need those items to support their respective needs. All of these people who are so heartbroken because their loved one dies from an addiction and want to blame others need to look to themselves. Where were you when the addict was building up to a lethal level. Look in the mirror and honestly tell yourself that you were unaware of that addiction and, being aware, how long did you ignore it? Conversely if you were not aware of it then you were obviously not as close to the person as you thought. Quit trying to regulate out of such a personal issue. Not everyone who uses an item, drugs or otherwise, should suffer because of someone else's lack of self control. There is a thing called personal accountability.
